Literally translated, Tai Ping means Great Peace. That message is both a trademark and a call to action:
“To protect the land on which we work and live, to enrich the lives of our staff and communities, and to preserve the time-honoured traditions of handcraftsmanship and quality on which the company is built.”
Tai Ping: Towards Sustainability
We know that sustainability is as important to our clients as it is to us. We began putting sustainability measures in place some years ago, and are constantly tracking our progress, improving our practices, and investigating new ones. We define sustainability in terms of the health and future of the natural environment in which we operate, the viability of our marketplace, as well as the safety, well-being, and fulfillment of our employees and associates.
To that end, the Tai Ping: Towards Sustainability (TPTS) label and logo have been developed to guide our customers towards our most sustainable products—going forward, wherever this symbol appears, it will indicate a product that has earned several internationally-recognized certifications towards sustainability. We are working towards the day when every Tai Ping product will bear the TPTS seal.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Like other companies concerned about the future of the planet, Tai Ping has adopted the “Three Rs”— Reduce, Reuse, Recycle—and put them into action in our factories. We have streamlined manufacturing practices to reuse and recycle as much material as possible, and we actively seek out suppliers who have also adopted this practice. Thanks to comprehensive mass balance assessment, material tracking, and company-wide recycling initiatives, we have seen a steady decrease in overall waste as well as an increase in recycle and reuse content at Tai Ping.
We have undertaken a close examination of water as both a fragile resource and an essential element in the manufacturing process. Since 2000, we have reduced consumption of local water resources year-on-year by 8% per square meter of carpet manufactured. Water waste has also been substantially reduced, and we are experimenting with ways to reuse unavoidable water waste in the production cycle. We have also instituted a rainwater capture program, thus reducing our dependence on and sparing, local water resources.
Our Commitment to Quality
Our commitment to quality demands that we use only the finest natural materials, a “green” choice in itself. Wool is a rapidly renewing resource and all our natural fibres—including silk, flax, and linen—are biodegradable and, increasingly, recyclable. All of our dyes have international approval and have been certified as non-toxic to human health.
As a multi-national company, we have addressed the issue of both regional and international shipping and transportation: we have analyzed our shipping needs and eliminated extraneous journeys, reducing energy consumption and emissions. We are pleased to have reduced our energy consumption year-on-year by 5% since 2000, but we strive to do even better—it is a long-term goal of Tai Ping’s to do away with our reliance on fossil fuels entirely.
